Deadly mosquito carrying Zika virus roams France

A mosquito, potentially deadly because it can carry diseases such as yellow fever and Zika virus, has been detected in northern France. This sparked fears the mosquitoes would spread to other areas.

Asian tiger mosquitoes were first seen in France, in the southeastern city of Nice in 2004. The pest has slowly spread northward over the past 17 years.

Quoted from the Mirror, Monday (6/9/2021) the French Regional Health Agency said this animal is very small, which is about 5 mm including its wings and body.

"This mosquito has black and white (not yellow) stripes on its body and legs, it is active and stings during the day, and its sting is painful," the agency said.

Each mosquito bite can lay up to 200 eggs, so the French Regional Health Agency released guidelines so that people can avoid being bitten by the deadly mosquito.

"Any containers containing rainwater need to be emptied, as these provide the perfect breeding ground for them to lay their eggs. Clearing the area of litter can also help reduce the chances of them breeding," he says.

If not prevented, these pests can carry the deadly Zika virus and yellow fever, as well as dengue fever and chikungunya fever.

This news comes amid news that a mysterious fever has spread to more than 30,000 people in India. The outbreak has sparked fears of new epidemics such as COVID-19. This fever claimed the lives of dozens of people, mostly children.
