Emperor Penguins and Antarctic Fur Seals Now Categorized as Endangered Animals

Hey, the world is burning up not only due to global warming, climate change and war in West Asia. But the stresses of life you are facing (or may face) are just a fraction of the problems faced by the Emperor Penguin and the Antarctic Fur Seal.

Both animals from the Antarctic continent are categorized as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN Red List). Climate change is causing their habitat to shrink and food sources to decrease.

Emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri), for example, require sea ice for breeding and molting. Analysis of satellite images found that 10% of the population was lost between 2009–2018, which is equivalent to a reduction of more than 20,000 adult penguins.

The plight of the Antarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella) is even more dire, with its population declining by almost 57% from 2.19 million in 1999 to just 944,000 in 2025. A lack of krill due to warming seas and shrinking ice is causing seal pups to die prematurely. Competition with returning baleen whales, as well as predators such as orcas and leopard seals, is also having an impact on the population.

Closer to home, all 42 species of Pakma (Rafflesia) flowers are threatened with extinction. 25 or 60% of them are now critically endangered, 15 are endangered and two are vulnerable to extinction. The Rafflesia magnifica was added to the IUCN Red List in 2023.
