Challenge Nvidia, Intel: There Must Be Alternative GPUs

In the realm of processors, Intel's arch-enemy is AMD. But that seems not enough for Intel, and now they are challenging Nvidia in the realm of graphics cards or GPUs.

This was revealed by Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger in an interview with CRN. One of the topics discussed was Intel's plan to challenge Nvidia and its strategies for dealing with the 'green team'.

"Nvidia is becoming too closed off, and that's seen widely in the industry, so we're going to fill that stack with oneAPI but do it in a way that's more engaging and open to the industry and their innovation," said Gelsinger.

oneAPI is an open programming model spanning a wide variety of architecture types, including Intel silicon products such as CPUs, GPUs, and FPGAs.

According to Gelsinger, Intel has been trying hard to work on GPUs, a sector that has been seen to be under-appreciated by Intel. He also promised that Intel GPUs would provide attractive features, performance, power consumption, and prices for consumers.

He promised that Intel would produce attractive products for the market. They also promise a smooth transition from an integrated graphics card to a discrete graphics card.

To reinforce this promise, Intel has previously hired a former AMD flagship GPU architect named Vineet Goel, who was tasked with developing the Xe GPU architecture, which will form the basis for Intel's future graphics cards.

He also commented on Nvidia's success so far, thanks to the leadership that has successfully steered Nvidia over the past decade. But according to him Nvidia is also 'very lucky' in the realm of artificial intelligence.

"Nvidia is essentially 10x or more leadership performance over a decade. If you have that, 10x leadership over 10 years, people will benefit from that," said Gelsinger.

"But they are also very lucky because intelligence becomes popular. So they work hard, they deserve it, and they are lucky," he explained.
