Spotify Will Be Able to Turn on Lights from IKEA

Over the years furniture giant IKEA has developed its furniture products to be tech savvy.

In the past few years IKEA and Sonos collaborated to create SYMFONISK speakers by combining IKEA furniture and product design with Sonos speakers and audio streaming technology.

Now the latest, according to a report from The Verge, Tuesday (19/10/2021) IKEA has submitted to the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) which reveals that IKEA is working on a new set of speaker lights which are supported by the Spotify music streaming service.

Named IKEA Vappeby, this speaker light will be equipped with a dedicated Spotify button that also doubles up to turn on the light.

This speaker lamp is not part of the SYMFONISK range, but rather a creation of IKEA itself as well as of the Spotify team. The Verge also points out that this speaker light is the first bluetooth speaker to feature the use of Spotify Tap.

Spotify Tap itself is a feature that allows users to resume playing their music whenever they stop.

This feature can be found in some headphone models, but it hasn't debuted in a set of Bluetooth speakers yet, so it's arguably a first.

There's no word on pricing or availability yet but given that this feature has already been spotted at the FCC, it's likely to be rolling out soon.
