Clean up the App Store, Apple will remove obsolete apps

Not long ago Apple has sent a notification to several indie developers warning them that the app will be pulled from the App Store if it is not updated within 30 days.

Previously in 2016 Apple already had a policy against obsolete or outdated applications and now Apple is again tightening the rules.

Reporting from Engadget, Apple's move has been criticized for being a barrier for indie developers where they will find it difficult to keep up with platform changes and how much work it takes to roll out even minor updates.

Now, Apple has published a post clarifying why some old apps are in danger of being removed, along with an announcement that it's giving developers more time to update their apps.

In the post, Apple said that it will only send takedown notices to developers whose apps haven't been updated in three years, as well as to developers whose apps haven't been downloaded at all or very little for the 12 months rolling.

Apple says that removing old apps makes newer ones easier to find and also ensures users can enjoy games and tools that have been optimized for their latest OS and devices.

As many know, there are old apps that just don't work well on the latest generation of phones, tablets and laptops anymore, providing a subpar user experience.

However, 30 days may not be close enough time for smaller developers to make updates.

The good news is that Apple has extended their grace period and is now giving them up to 90 days to update their apps.

Users will be able to keep apps already installed on their devices even if they are eventually deleted, and developers can continue to earn from those apps through microtransactions.
