Samsung first introduced a 200 MP camera in September last year, but so far there are no phones that carry the sensor. After a long time of no news, Samsung has just shown off the sophistication of the camera sensor for the first time.
In a demonstration video, Samsung wants to show how the ISOCELL 200 MP sensor can capture photos with fantastic detail and definition. Samsung explained that the sensor is still in the development stage.
Samsung also chose cats as the subjects of its photos, a challenge because the cats just can't stand still. Photos that have been taken and then printed and the size reaches 28 meters x 22 meters or the equivalent of 1.5 times the size of a basketball court,
"I always imagined how big you could print a 200 MP image," said Lee Minhyuk, engineer from Samsung's LSI Business System team, as quoted by Android Authority, Thursday (26/5/2022).
Because it is still in the development stage, the camera sensor has not been installed in the cellphone. Instead, Samsung made a special rig consisting of an external display and a test board to plant a 200 MP camera sensor.
The shooting process is a bit complicated. First the photographer must check the external screen and adjust the composition of the photo. After that, the technician changes the sensor settings to optimize light exposure and focus.
"After observing the cat's movements, the film crew then used several different methods to take a series of photos," Samsung said.
The Samsung team then printed the 616-square-meter photo on 12 pieces of 2.3-meter-long cloth and then sewed them together.
The Samsung ISOCELL HP1 sensor with a resolution of 200 MP will use ChameleonCell's pixel binning technology which can unite four or 16 pixels into one large pixel. This configuration can produce 12.5 MP photos by 2.56μm, 50 MP (1.28μm) or 200 MP (0.64μm).
Reportedly this sensor will debut on the Motorola Frontier phone in July. In addition to a 200 MP camera, this flagship phone will also be equipped with a 50 MP ultra-wide camera, a 12 MP telephoto camera, and a 60 MP front camera.
