As reported, the feature will hit all WhatsApp users this August which means it won't be long. WhatsApp has not shown how to do it yet, but from the pictures and information provided, you can already feel how to use it.
It is certain that to hide WhatsApp's online status, users simply access the settings, then press on the Account or account section, then on the privacy or Privacy section.
Currently, there is no update to hide online status. However, it is ensured, that WhatsApp users can control who can see their online status, the same as controls for the last seen or Last Seen feature.

The 'Last seen and online' or 'Last seen and online' settings appear to be lumped together in a menu. Users can set who sees online status in the 'Who can see when I'm online' sub menu.
