HP is getting better, sales are even getting worse

HP's global Q4 2022 shipments decreased 18.3% over Q4 2021 to 300.3 million units, which was the largest decline in history.

According to IDC data, the decline in HP shipments in Q4 2022 also contributed greatly to the decline in HP shipments during 2022, which reached 11.3%, or a total of 1.21 billion units, which was the lowest annual HP shipments since 2013.

According to IDC, this decline was influenced by many factors, starting from weak demand, inflation, to economic uncertainty, we were quoted as saying from The Verge, Friday (27/1/2023).

"We have never seen shipments during the holiday quarter lower than last quarter. Even so, weak demand and abundant stocks prompted companies to reduce shipments drastically," said Nabila Popal, research director at IDC.

According to IDC, HP manufacturers are becoming more careful in shipping their products, where sales and promotions are focused on products that have already piled up in warehouses and not new shipments.

One of the causes that has the greatest impact is the weakening market demand. This is because today's cellphones can be said to have reached a very mature stage in terms of capabilities, so that the capabilities of cellphones that consumers already have are considered sufficient and there is no need to replace them with new ones.

According to IDC, most users in many major markets wait up to 40 months to buy a new cellphone, and this is not a new trend because AT&T and Verizon -- the two mobile operators in the US -- have warned about this.

Behind this decline, there is Apple which is still the largest HP manufacturer and followed by Samsung in 2nd place. Both experienced a 15% drop in shipments.

The drop in shipments will be revealed when Apple releases its financial reports next week, and Samsung has previously warned of a drop in profits due to sluggish demand for electronic devices in recent quarters.

For cellphone makers, conditions like this are certainly not good. But on the other hand, consumers might benefit because there will be lots of trade-in offers or various promotions because HP makers will definitely be competing to find new methods to increase sales of their products.

"Consumers may find trade-in or promotional offers especially attractive in 2023 as the market will look for new methods to entice consumers to upgrade their devices, especially high-end models," Anthony Scarsella, research director at IDC.
