Even though it is still controlled by Intel, AMD's market share in the realm of x86 processors continues to push up and undermine the market from the blue stronghold when the PC market weakens in Q4 2022.
According to data from Mercury Research, in the quarter Intel had a market share of 68.7% in the realm of x86 processors, while AMD's market share rose to 31.3% from 28.5% a year earlier.
Previously President of Mercury Research Dean McCarron said the decline in Q4 2022 was the worst decline in the PC chip market since the 1980s, and possibly the worst in industry history.
This decline seems to be getting worse because previously the PC business experienced a surge after years of stagnation. At the start of the pandemic, the PC business took off because many people needed PCs or laptops to work at home.
Even though the PC market is weakening, AMD is actually still able to beat Wall Street's sales estimates. On the other hand Intel admits that they stumbled, lost momentum, and lost market share.
"We stumbled, we lost market share, we lost momentum. We think it will stabilize starting this year," said Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger.
The decline in PC sales also affected Apple through its Mac line, which is the source of sales of PC devices based on ARM chips. According to Mercury, ARM chips for PCs controlled by Apple currently have a market share of 13.3%, down from 14.6% in the previous quarter but still up from a market share the previous year which was only 10.3%.
For information, Arm, which is owned by Softbank, is the licensee for the chip technology used by Apple and Qualcomm for their PC chips. They are also expanding into new markets such as PC as part of their growth strategy.
