"Ok Google pay the lawsuit!". This may be the order Sundar Pichai gave to his Google Nest Hub after Google was found guilty of infringing Sonos' smart speaker patent. The tech giant has to pay $32.5 million (~RM150 million) in damages to Sonos.
Sonos filed a lawsuit against Google in 2020 alleging they infringed on several patents for voice command systems and smart speakers. Only claims for damages for two patents belonging to Sonos were allowed in the trial by the court compared to the six claims filed. The trial has been going on since last April and is only now finished.
Sonos representatives issued a statement that the success of their case shows that Google is a company that regularly infringes patents with around 200 Sonos patents believed to be infringed by the company. Meanwhile, Google's representative said they were only found guilty of infringing one patent by not using it regularly. Google is considering the next steps to take.
