The most recent chip manufacturing technology at this time is 3nm and it can be done by TSMC and Samsung. The Apple M3 and A17 Pro chips are two chips produced through this technology. Technology is constantly being developed and TSMC announced that they will start producing 1.6mm chips by 2026.
TSMC A16 technology was announced during their technology symposium yesterday. It will come after the 2nm technology which will start production in H2 2025. According to TSMC, the 1.6mm technology will provide a performance increase of up to 8-10% for the same voltage as well as a reduction in power consumption between 15-20% at the same speed.
The TSMC inio chip production timeline is comparable to Samsung which will produce 2nm chips in 2025 and 1.4nm chips will be produced by 2027. The need for chips with the latest technology is driven by the demand from high performance computers (HPC), artificial intelligence, 5G/6G and also automotive.
