Synology Reverses Decision to Use Own-Brand Hard Drives Only

Synology is a leading Network Attached Storage brand that is known for offering affordable products and complete storage systems for a wide range of users.

Recently, Synology has reportedly reversed that decision with the recently released DSM 7.3 software update. If you own a Synology NAS that was sold in 2025, you can update the NAS operating system to this latest version, and you will be able to use hard drives from other brands such as Seagate and Western Digital without any problems.

In the middle of this year, they made a strange decision that for NAS products launched this year, users are only allowed to use them with their own brand hard drive storage. Previously, users could choose to use any other storage they wanted.

The use of other brand hard drives is said to cause a large number of Synology NAS functions such as hard drive health scans and others to be unusable, and it will be more difficult for users to find the cause if any hard drive fails for any reason.

This has led many Synology users to say that they will not buy new NAS storage from them because even though Synology is a well-known NAS brand, their hard drive brand is a rebrand from another brand.

With this new decision, Synology seems to be hoping that users will return to buying and using their NAS storage, but whether or not previous loyal users will return is unknown.
