NVIDIA Announces Platform for Space Data Centers

After receiving criticism for using up abundant water and energy resources on Earth. Several projects have been announced to build data centers in space that offer unlimited solar power and waterless cooling. At GTC this morning NVIDIA announced several new modules designed specifically for space data centers.

The first module is the NVIDIA Space-1 Vera Rubin Module which offers up to 25 times higher artificial intelligence performance than the H100 chip launched into orbit by Starcloud late last year. It will be used by Aetherflux, Axiom Space, Kepler Communications, Planet, Sophia Space, and Starcloud. In addition to being used for data centers, it can also be used for advanced geospatial processing and autonomous space operations.

Meanwhile, the NVIDIA IGX Thor and NVIDIA Jetson Orin platforms are now also being offered to space to offer more power-efficient systems, offering high-powered AI inference while simultaneously performing image detection and data processing tasks using edge computing while in orbit.

NVIDIA IGX Thor and Jetson Orin are already available to customers while the NVIDIA Space-1 Vera Rubin Module will be offered at a date to be announced.
