Various countries have begun implementing restrictions and bans for users under 16 years of age from accessing social media due to its negative effects. Malaysia is also not left behind, and has been in the process of identifying and exploring it since before.
Touching on this, the Minister of Communications once again emphasized that the government is targeting mid-2026 to implement restrictions on social media access for users under 16 years of age. MCMC is currently said to be in the final review phase, and will bring it to the ministry in the coming week, and it is hoped that it can be implemented as early as June or July.
Social media platforms are said to have expressed their readiness to implement restrictions for users under 16 years of age. MCMC is ready to conduct a field test with social media platforms in identifying the implementation mechanism for these restrictions by platform providers.
These bans and restrictions are being considered and have begun to be implemented in a number of countries, due to the negative effects of social media platforms on young people.
