91 Percent of Social Media Content Ordered to Be Deleted Is Related to Scams or Gambling

Since January 2026 until now, the government through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has asked social media platforms to delete 271,421 pieces of content posted on the platforms.

Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Minister of Communications and Multimedia, confirmed the matter, saying that as much as 91 percent of the content that needs to be deleted is related to scams and online gambling.

He also said that 81 percent of gambling content and 58 percent of fraudulent content displayed online in Malaysia is displayed through the Facebook platform.

He was also briefed by the Deputy Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia that throughout the past year, Malaysian banks have successfully prevented financial frauds that saved RM1.2 billion from customers being stolen by fraud syndicates.

Despite this, these syndicates still managed to cause losses worth RM2.7 billion last year, and this is something that still needs to be improved by all parties.

Datuk Fahmi Fadzil was speaking at the Inter-Agency Retreat on Combatting Online Scam 2026, an event organised by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in collaboration with the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) which was also attended by the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA).

The development of a task force is being discussed with the cooperation of various parties, including the government, security agencies, telecommunications companies and banking companies to strengthen collaboration and ensure that consumer data and the people's money remain safe.

The task force is expected to be introduced two to three weeks after it is tabled in Parliament.
