Yinson GreenTech (YGT), through its unit marinEV, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Langkawi Port Sdn Bhd (LPSB) to realize Malaysia’s first electric ferry project. The project aims to introduce a fully electric passenger ferry service operating between Kuah, Langkawi, and Kuala Perlis.
Under this agreement, marinEV will provide the ferries, while LPSB manages service operations. Meanwhile, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) will develop the power supply and charging infrastructure. Malaysia’s first electric ferry service has been granted National Priority Project status with support from the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Finance, and the Marine Department Malaysia.
The ferries utilize marinEV’s Hydroferry platform, featuring a fully electric propulsion system, onboard energy storage, marinEV’s digital technology, and autonomous and remote-control operational capabilities developed by Zeabuz.
Once operational, the service will enhance transport connectivity between Langkawi and the Malaysian mainland. Furthermore, it serves as a practical demonstration of integrating electric vessels, shore-based charging infrastructure, and digital technology into daily passenger transport operations.
