In addition to a government directive prohibiting civil servants from using the navigation app Waze, the National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) has now published a set of frequently asked questions (FAQs) on the matter, while also encouraging civil servants to uninstall the Waze app.
As previously announced, the decision to ban the use of Waze was made after considering security and data protection concerns for users in Malaysia, given that the app collects location, movement, and travel data—and stores this information in Israel.
Currently, this prohibition applies to civil servants while they are performing official duties; however, they are strongly encouraged to uninstall the app entirely and switch to alternative navigation applications. Two local navigation apps that have recently entered the market include Tuju and Pintaz.
Beyond NACSA, the Prime Minister has also advised all Malaysians to stop using Waze and transition to other alternative applications.
