Tips to Avoid Becoming a Victim of Phishing on Instagram

Along with World Safe Internet Day, Instagram also shared tips for its users not to fall victim to scams by using phishing methods and suspicious messages.

As is well known, a number of users may have received Live Messages on behalf of Instagram.

The content of the message also varies, from a notification to deleting an account or offer to creating an authorized account.

But Instagram in an official statement ensured that it never contacted users via Direct Messages. Companies only use email as a channel of communication with users.

According to the company, the verified account that took the action on behalf of Instagram occurred after the perpetrator hijacked the account of a public figure. Therefore, these accounts are usually accompanied by a blue check mark.

In addition to direct sequencing, phishing can also be done via email. To that end, users are asked to be more careful when getting suspicious emails on behalf of Instagram or Facebook.

“The main thing you should do is not click on a link in a message without checking it first,” the company wrote in a statement. Additionally, there are some key features of fake email to keep in mind.

One of them is typo. So, there are additional letters and numbers in the sender’s email address, such as Instgram, Inst4gram, Instagram1, and 1nstagram.

Email also typically uses a public domain, not the company’s Instagram or Facebook domain. Messages in emails also usually contain threats or offers to verify accounts.

“It should be noted that Instagram never asked users to verify an account to get verification and never asked for payment for the verification process,” Instagram wrote emphasizing.

The message also usually contains a request that prompts the user to click on a link. After that, the link will ask the user to enter personal account information, such as username and password.

Instagram also says users can take advantage of features in the app to make sure the emails they receive actually come from them. The feature in question is Email from Instagram

“If the email you receive is listed in the Email list from Instagram, it can be ascertained that the email is officially from Instagram,” the company wrote.

To access the Email feature from Instagram, users can follow these steps:

Open Settings, by tapping the three -row icon in the upper right corner of the Instagram profile
Select Security
Then open Email from Instagram and Email from Instagram
Aside from Instagram, similar features can be found on Facebook. Users can check ‘Recent Emails from Facebook’ in the Security and Login section of the Settings menu.
