Apple Delays WFO Due to Increase in COVID-19 Cases

Apple has rejected plans to return to work in the office (WFO) until at least October. The delay was announced due to an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the United States due to delta variants.
Apple had initially shared plans for its employees to return to work in the office in early September. IPhone manufacturers will implement a hybrid work system that requires employees to enter the office three days a week.

According to a report from Bloomberg, his schedule is now pushed by at least a month to October. Apple will notify employees a month before they must return to the office, as quoted from The Verge, Wednesday (21/7/2021).

The WFO policy that Apple will implement is something that is controversial in the eyes of some of its employees. Some employees have even written open letters to Apple CEO Tim Cook asking the company to consider a more flexible work -from -home system.

But other Apple executives, such as SVP of Retail and People Deirdre O’Brien, stress that face -to -face, face -to -face collaboration is critical to the company’s work culture and future.

Prior to the outbreak, Apple was a bit stingy in allowing its employees to work from home, although there were a few exceptions. But some employees worry this exemption won’t happen again.

Apple’s decision to return to the office is also different from other Silicon Valley companies that give freedom to its employees. For example, Facebook estimates that about half of its employees will work remotely in the next five to 10 years.

Google says about 20% of its employees will continue to work from home even if the office reopens. Even companies like Twitter offer a fixed WFH option to its employees.
