Google has finally announced the name of its latest smartwatch operating system, Wear OS 3, which is a combination of Wear OS and Samsung’s Tizen.
In addition to formalizing the name, Google also revealed when the new OS will appear and which smartwatch will get Wear OS 3.
According to Google, only a handful of current smartwatches will get Wear OS 3. The update won’t be available until the second half of 2022.
Smartwatches that will get it include the Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 GPS, TicWatch Pro 3 LTE, TicWatch E3, as well as the Fossil smartwatch that will be released in 2021.
This means that many Android smartwatches won’t get Wear OS 3. Even the Samsung Tizen -based smartwatch, which is by far the best smartwatch for Android.
Therefore, now is not the right time to buy an Android smartwatch. The reason is that almost all of the devices available now will not get the Wear OS 3 update, or at least get the update in 2022.
Moreover, Google has warned that the current Wear OS smartwatch, if it can be updated to Wear OS 3, may experience performance issues. This matter was not explained further by Google.
But what is clear is that to update Wear OS 3 the user has to do a factory reset and erase all the settings and data on the watch.
The quickest option if you can’t wait to buy an Android smartwatch is to wait for Samsung to launch its new Galaxy Watch in August at the Samsung Unpacked event, which is supposed to be the world’s first Wear OS 3 device.
So far, based on Google’s claims, Wear OS 3 is promising. Google calls performance will be faster and also longer battery life. Likewise, support for standalone apps from Google Maps, Spotify offline, and so on.
