Italy is not only great in football after winning Euro 2020. This Pasta Country also seems to be a pioneer of 5G in Europe.
Speedtest says that Italy is the fourth country to launch 5G services commercially, where competition is fierce.
There are four cellular operators struggling to sell 5G in Italy, namely TIM, Vodafone, Iliad, and WINDTRE. Based on its performance, Speedtest sees that TIM is the most superior with an average internet download speed of 282.94 Mbps and an upload speed of 24.50 Mbps.
Italy auctioned the spectrum for 5G use in October 2018, but allocated only 200 MHz of mid -band spectrum (3.4 - 3.8 GHz). A relatively narrow band launched 5G, and prices were still relatively high at the time.
February 2019, TIM and Vodafone announced plans to merge their towers in Italy, including sharing passive and active networks in cities of less than 100,000 inhabitants.
WINDTRE and Fastweb (fixed line operators and MVNOs) took corporate action by agreeing to share their network assets in order to use 5G faster for their customers.
As a measure to increase 5G coverage using Dynamic Spectum Sharing (DSS) technology, operators in Italy are delivering 5G using the available 4G LTE spectrum.
Speedtest says Italy is following a trend in Europe that limits Huawei's involvement in the national telecommunications infrastructure. Meanwhile, Vodafone obtained conditional approval from the Italian government for the use of Huawei equipment in its 5G radio access network.
If viewed from a European perspective, Speedtest revealed that in the second quarter of 2021, Italy’s 5G internet speeds are in fifth place behind Austria at 143.98 Mbps, Slovenia at 145.78 Mbps, France at 189.16 Mbps, and Switzerland at the peak with 177.33. Mbps.
Speaking of the city in Italy that has the fastest 5G internet speed, Naples is at 223.98 Mbps. After that, Turin 175.88 Mbps, Bologna 168.83 Mbps, Milan 156.25 Mbps, Bari 153.84 Mbps, and the capital Rome with 151.83 Mbps.
