Windows 7 users cannot update to Windows 11 directly

Although out of support in January 2020, Windows 7 is still widely used. In fact, according to a study, this operating system is the second most popular on the market.
With Windows 11, Microsoft hopes Windows 7 users will migrate to the latest operating system. And a survey shows that 65% of Windows 7 users will update to Windows 11 when it officially launches later this year.

But the problem is that theoretically very few PCs and laptops running Windows 7 are eligible to upgrade to Windows 11. Because the new operating system only supports Intel 8th Gen or AMD Zen 2 processors.

In addition, Microsoft confirmed that even if a PC or laptop running Windows 7 meets the requirements, users will not be allowed to directly upgrade to Windows 11. This is because devices running Windows 7 are not provided with a direct method to upgrade data to the latest Windows.

"Most devices available for purchase now will be able to upgrade to Windows 11. You will have the option to upgrade, clean install, or re-implement Windows 10 to move to Windows 11. For Windows 7 devices that meet the hardware requirements, you will need to install a completely new one or switch to Windows 10 then upgrade to Windows 11 immediately," Microsoft said as quoted by Softpedia.

Therefore, the whole process will require additional work, especially for data backup. Enterprise IT administrators are advised to plan the migration in advance for their entire network.
