Australian Media 'Blocked' YouTube for One Week Because of COVID-19

The YouTube account of one of Australia’s media outlets, Sky News Australia, has been temporarily suspended by YouTube and banned from uploading content. This is because its content violates policies related to COVID-19 information.
YouTube has conducted a survey of Sky News Australia content where many videos contain misinformation denying the existence of the COVID-19 virus.

In addition, Sky News Australia content also encourages people to use hydroxychlorquine or ivermectin to treat the COVID-19 virus without providing a balanced context.

The ban took effect on Thursday, (29/7) a day after the Daily Telegraph media ended Alan Jone’s regular column amid controversy over comments related to COVID-19.

Including calling New South Wales Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant, “stupid” on Australia’s Sky News program.

The Sky News Australia YouTube channel has 1.85 million subscribers operated by Australian News Channel Pty Ltd and its subsidiary News Corp Australia has received a warning and is temporarily suspended for uploading new videos or live broadcasts next week.

"Sky News Australia recognizes YouTube's right to enforce its policies and hopes to continue delivering its popular news and analytical content to its subscribers in the near future," Sky News said in a statement on its website about the one -week delay.

As a result of the delay, this will affect Sky News ’revenue generation. Google and News Corp had previously forged a historic partnership after signing a multi-year partnership in February 2021 under a media bargaining code.

YouTube itself has not yet revealed the Sky News program where the video came from but YouTube says that many of the offensive videos have now been released. They have also confirmed their move to suspend the Sky News Australia account for a week.

"We apply our policy equally to everyone and in accordance with this policy and our legacy reprimand system, remove videos from and issue reprimands to the Sky News Australia channel," a YouTube spokesperson said.
