PlayStation Plus Loses Many Customers Since Lockdown Ends

For the first time, the PlayStation (PS) Plus, experienced a significant drop in subscribers. The number reached more than 1 million in the last quarter.
Since Sony began collaborating on the PS Plus with the PS5 in late 2020, this subscription service has seen little improvement. Even so, although the quality and quantity of games have increased from month to month, it seems, they have not been able to gain more customers.

In fact, this gaming console company should be willing to lose a lot of PS Plus customers in Q1 2021. The number hit 46.3 million, down to 1.3 million, which is less than the last two quarters, quoted from Gamerant, Friday (6) / 8 /21).

As Sony’s Head of Financial Offering (CFO), Hiroki Totoki, sees it from a different perspective and tries to take the positive. He said, despite the decline compared to last year, there was an increase compared to fiscal year 2019.

"I can say that last year's demand for housing was very high. So when compared to last year's period, as a trend, of course this is declining. But compared to fiscal 2019 there is an increase," Totoki said.

He says that the number of players subscribing to PS Plus has skyrocketed in recent years. For example, in June 2019, that number touched 36.3 million customers.

This proves, that almost more than 10 million players have joined in two years. So the reduction that happens, doesn’t make it too bad.

Sony also revealed not too worried. They added that they will monitor the situation closely and improve the quality of the platform.

“Therefore, over the next fiscal year, we will take action to support this business,” Totoki said.

In order to provide convenience to customers, PS Plus is not only able to play online games. They often give away free games every month and can be played, as long as the membership is still active.
