Rumors of iPhone 13 Will Be Able to Use Satellite Phones

After the presence of 5G on the iPhone 12, Apple will reportedly add new connectivity features on the iPhone 13. Namely satellite phones.

In his analysis of investors, renowned analyst Apple specialist Ming-Chi Kuo said the iPhone 13 would have a low-earth-orbit satellite communication mode. In this mode, the iPhone 13 can still be used to send messages and make phone calls even if it is not connected to a cellular network.

This satellite connectivity technology was first reported by Bloomberg in 2019. However, its presence on the iPhone 13 has only appeared for the first time, namely through an analysis from Kuo.

In the future, Kuo speculates that this LEO satellite communication will be used for various other Apple devices. For example, Apple's augmented reality headset, Apple Car, and various other Apple internet of things accessories.

To be able to connect to LEO satellites, the iPhone will use a custom version of the Qualcomm X60 modem chip, which supports connection to satellites.

It's not yet clear whether these calls and satellite messaging will only be available for Apple services like iMessage and FaceTime, or can support communication to regular devices connected to typical cell tower networks.

It is also unknown whether this service will be available for free like GPS or if its use will be subject to additional fees.

Apple itself is expected to release the iPhone 13 lineup in September. The phone is expected to have the same appearance as the iPhone 12, such as size and shape.

Additional capabilities are expected to be in the capabilities of the camera system, a screen with a high refresh rate for the Pro model and also a smaller notch.
