More Aggressive, Google Prepares Its Own Chip for Chromebooks

Google is rumored to be releasing its own CPU for use in Chromebook laptops and tablets. According to a report from Nikkei Asia, this custom chip is predicted to be announced in 2023.

Google itself has previously developed a homemade chip called Tensor for Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro phones. Currently the two phones have not been officially released but Google has already given a sneak peek about the Tensor chip.

This report from Nikkei is in line with rumors circulating since 2020 that Google will make its own chips for Chromebooks after debuting in Pixel phones.

The report provides some additional information about the CPUs of Google's Chromebooks. Just like Tensor and other lines of mobile chips, the chip for this Chromebook will be based on the ARM design, as quoted from The Verge, Thursday (2/9/2021).

ARM-based chips are increasingly being used in Chromebooks, including chips made by Qualcomm and MediaTek. Google also designed this chip to be used for form factor laptops and tablets.

But the report doesn't say which devices will use Google's chips first. The search engine giant last launched the Pixelbook Go laptop in 2019, and the Pixel Slate tablet is nearly three years old.

Apparently Google's target to develop its own Chromebook chip was inspired by Apple's successful move to make custom chips for iPhone, iPad and Mac. As is known, Apple has started selling Macs and iPad Pros that use its own M1 chip.

With its own chips, Google will reduce its dependence on other companies and can provide features that suit their needs. Currently, Google's Chromebook laptops rely on CPUs from Intel and AMD, including the Pixelbook Go which uses 8th generation Intel chips.
