81 Million TikTok Videos Removed, What's Up?

TikTok has reportedly removed 81,518,334 videos for violating community guidelines or TikTok policy requirements during the period between April 1 and June 30, 2021.

This figure represents less than 1% of the total posted videos. This means that during the quarter there were more than 8.1 billion videos posted on TikTok, of which an average of around 90 million videos are posted daily.

In July, TikTok did launch a technology that can automatically remove content that violates policies on safety, sexual activity, violent and vulgar content to illegal activities.

The app uses automation for that type of content specifically, as this is arguably the area where the technology has the highest level of accuracy. TikTok also has human content moderators on its security team who review reported content.

When this automated technology was announced TikTok said as much as 5% of video content that wasn't actually against the rules was deleted. This figure represents about 4.6 million of the 81 million deleted videos that have been recovered.

The most common reason for content being removed, accounting for 41.3% of deleted videos, was for minor safety guidelines violations. TikTok says that 94.1% of all deleted content is identified and removed before users report it.

In Q2, TikTok removed 27,518 videos due to COVID-19 misinformation. TikTok says that 83% of these videos were removed before they were reported by the user, 87.6% of these videos were removed within 24 hours of posting, and 69.7% of the videos were not watched.

Meanwhile, TikTok's COVID-19 information center developed with information from the WHO and the CDC was viewed more than 921 million times globally.

In terms of numbers, it's no secret that TikTok continues to grow, as the app passed 1 billion monthly active users last month.

The figures in this transparency report also reflect that growth - in the first half of 2020, TikTok removed 104 million videos, which represents 1% of all posted content.
