Android 12 Returns to Using Food Names, Here's What It's Called

Google has finally released a stable version of Android 12 to the Android Open Source Project after a few months of beta testing. Apart from bringing many new features, Android 12 also brings back the Android tradition of using the name sweet food.

Android 12 now has another official name, Snow Cone. This name is official because it was announced directly by the Vice President of Engineering for Android Dave Bruke via Twitter.

This is the first time that Google has returned to using the sweet food name for Android in three years. As is known, in 2019 Google stopped using a unique name for its mobile operating system when it launched Android 10.

Since then, every Android version released has only used names in numerical order, such as Android 10 and Android 11. But internally, these two versions still use sweet food names, such as Quince Tart (Android 10) and Red Velvet Cake (Android 11).

This is not the first time Snow Cone has been revealed as another name for Android 12. The name first appeared in February when the internal name of Android 12 was leaked to the public, as quoted from Android Central, Wednesday (6/10/2021).

When launching a new version of Android, Google usually replaces the internal code with another, more official name. But this time the name Snow Cone continued to be maintained until its public launch.

Apart from bringing back the sweet food name, Android 12 also brings many improvements such as a more dynamic theme system, widgets with a new design, and improved privacy settings. Android 12 also brings a new design called 'Material You' which Google calls the most drastic design change on Android.

Android 12 will be available for Google Pixel phones first in the next few weeks. Google is also currently preparing to launch its new Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro phones on October 19.
