Expert: We Are Too Dependent on Facebook and WhatsApp

The collapse of Facebook and its subsidiaries, Instagram and WhatsApp, made many people confused. This indicates how much dependence on these services, whether for personal or business matters.

Therefore, even though people are down for so long that it lasts about 6 hours, people still don't switch to other services or leave Facebook products. So, Facebook is considered not too affected by this massive disturbance.

"Ultimately, Facebook as a company and platform will remain that way. That's because they have around 3 billion users worldwide, far above any other social media platform. They have Instagram and WhatsApp, both of which have massive users," said Dr Ramesh Srinivasan, professor of communications at the University of California, Los Angeles.

He also highlighted how much power Facebook has in the realm of social media. WhatsApp and Instagram make them able to reach so many users. WhatsApp is relied on by billions of people to send messages while Instagram is the social media of choice for young people.

He also hopes that Facebook will be more responsible in its business practices. "Facebook as a company must choose to be responsible to the wider community they are constantly monitoring, manipulating and making money," he said.

He called modern human life addicted to social media. "We are addicted to digital because our lives are mediated by digital technology," he explained.

Regarding whether the authorities need to regulate Facebook or break it down so that it is less powerful, by separating WhatsApp and Instagram, Dr Ramesh doubts that this will be done in the near future. But maybe they can be arranged in other ways that are easier to implement.
