Google Doodle Remembers Roehana Koeddoes, First Journalist in Indonesia

Today's Google Doodle, Monday (8/11/2021) remembers Roehana Koeddoes. She is the first journalist in Indonesia.

Roehana Koeddoes was born on December 20, 1884 in the small town of Koto Gadang, West Sumatra. Her parents gave her the name Siti Roehana

She grew up in an era when Indonesian women generally had no formal education. Little Roehana loves reading so much.

At the age of 7, he and his friends often devoured the pages of local newspapers and shared local news.

In 1911, Roehana started her career in education. She founded the first school in Indonesia specifically for girls.

The school was founded in his hometown and named Koeddoes. Through this school, Roehana wants to empower women through various programs, from teaching Arabic literacy to morality.

Roehana further expanded her influence after moving to Bukittinggi by becoming a journalist. Here, she played a key role in the pioneering women's newspaper 'Soenting Melajoe'.

As a first in Indonesia, this publication directly inspired the development of several influential Indonesian women's newspapers.

Throughout her career, through articles she wrote in Koeddoes, Roehana has continued to encourage women to defend equality and fight colonialism, with some achieving national recognition. Thanks to her struggle, many consider women in Indonesian journalism to be more critical and courageous than before.

It would not be wrong if then on November 7, 2019, President Jokowi crowned Roehana as a national hero. Roehana himself died on August 17, 1972 at the age of 87 years.
