Lionel Messi won the Ballon d'Or 2021, this is the seventh time he has won the prestigious award. Netizens around the world immediately flooded the line with congratulations to the Argentine -born striker.
The award, initiated by France Football magazine, was held at the Theater du Chatelet, Paris, France on Monday night local time (29/11/2021). Messi managed to beat two names who were also candidates for the Ballon d'Or, namely Robert Lewandowski and Jorginho.
The 34 -year -old footballer was chosen as the best player because Messi led the Argentine national team as the Copa America champions. This title is very important, because this is the first major tournament title for his country.
Upon winning the Ballon d'Or 2021, Messi became the owner of the most trophies. He managed to surpass Cristiano Ronaldo who just collected five titles.
In the event, it was also announced that the winner of the Ballon d'Or 2021 Best Female Player was taken by Barcelona player Alexia Putellas. While the Best Young Player or Kopa Trophy was won by Pedri, and the winner of the Yashin Trophy or Best Goalkeeper was Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Two new categories, namely Best Club 2021 were won by Chelsea and Lewandowski won the title of Best Striker 2021.
