YouTube Will Dive into NFT World, Follow Meta and Twitter

YouTube is the umpteenth technology platform that will enliven the world of non-fungible tokens (NFT). The new move was announced directly by CEO Susan Wojcicki in her letter outlining YouTube's priorities for 2022.

Wojcicki did not go into detail about how YouTube would integrate NFT into its platform. He only said that this trendy technology could be a source of income for creators.

"The past year in the world of crypto, nun-fungible tokens (NFT), and even decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) have highlighted previously unimaginable opportunities to foster connections between creators and their fans," Wojcicki wrote in his letter. Wednesday (26/1/2022).

"We've always focused on expanding the YouTube ecosystem to help creators take advantage of emerging technologies, including things like NFT, while continuing to strengthen and enhance the creator and fan experience on YouTube."

Wojcicki also said YouTube sees Web3 as a source of inspiration. Web3 is a future internet concept involving blockchain technology, crypto, and a decentralized platform.

If YouTube allowed creators to sell NFT directly to their fans, this would be a huge endorsement of the new technology. Currently, not many major platforms have adopted NFT, but in 2022 it looks like this will change.

Before YouTube revealed its plans, Twitter had already announced a feature that would allow users to NFT their collections as profile photos. Meta, which is the parent of Facebook and Instagram, is also rumored to be working on a feature for displaying, creating and buying and selling NFTs.

The creators of several viral YouTube videos have also turned them into NFT and are selling for fantastic prices. Like the creator of the video 'Charlie Bit Me' which was auctioned last year and sold for USD 761,000.

NFT isn't the only monetization opportunity YouTube is eyeing this year. Wojcicki also said YouTube will dive deeper into the world of podcasts which will become a source of revenue for creators.

He also confirmed that YouTube would expand the shopping feature to more creators, and looked for ways to integrate the Shopping feature into YouTube Shorts.
