Already the Digital Age, Signatures Still Used in the Future?

Signature is still an important thing that is often done, for example to legalize a document or for other activities. But the fact is, in the digital world, most young people hardly use signatures.

That fact was revealed by Brett King, who is the CEO of the mobile application Meven. He added that there are much safer ways to prevent fraud. Therefore, it is time to move on from signatures to something more secure.

"Signatures are artifacts that we don't need anymore. These are relics from many years ago. I think there will be a natural evolution where signatures die slowly," he said, as reported by the BBC.

Furthermore, compared to fingerprints, or eye scans, signatures are relatively easy to copy or change, says identity fraud expert Tom Craig.

Signatures are still used in the banking system. But there is always a check system around the signature like photo ID or something else, this shows the signature cannot be trusted on its own.

"It's a matter of time before voice recognition or biometric technology replaces it altogether. I could see his signature die - not anytime soon, but eventually," says Craig.

Signatures have existed for a long time in human culture. A Sumerian clay tablet from about 3,100 BC is marked with the name of the scribe Gar Ama. The Romans used signatures since the reign of Valentinian III in 439. That means, signatures do have a long history.
