Huawei Makes Gadgets for the Blind

A patent reveals Huawei is developing a device that can help visually impaired users navigate everyday.

Since Huawei was sanctioned in the US, the Chinese company has diversified its product catalog from smartphones to become an IoT (Internet of Things) business.

Huawei has penetrated into other businesses such as smart TVs, smartwatches, and even smart electric cars. It looks like Huawei may be planning to release devices in new product categories as well, such as its own medical assistance devices.

Recently, a patent database revealed that the company is working on a wearable gadget that makes it easier for the visually impaired to navigate without the help of others.

This information comes from China's National Patent Database agency, QCC.com. Huawei Technologies Company Limited has been approved for "blind navigation wearable technology".

The patent reveals that the technology is a pair of devices that blind users can wear to identify and navigate around their environment.

The technology will be equipped with ultrasonic sensors. This sensor emits ultrasonic signals in all directions and the signal is reflected back to the device, where the device interprets the signal and maps its surroundings.

All this data will be conveyed to users in a very concise manner, and the process is autonomous, making it easy for visually impaired users.

Reporting from Gizmochina, there is no information whether this technology will be embedded in wearable devices such as smartwatches, smart glasses, or wireless earwear.

However, given that this is a technology designed for the visually impaired, it is most likely a speaker-equipped device, i.e. wireless headphones or wireless earphones.
