Instagram has pulled its separate app from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store again. This time, it was the turn of the Boomerang and Hyperlapse applications that were retired.
"We have withdrawn support for the Boomerang and Hyperlapse apps to focus our efforts more on the main app," Instagram spokeswoman Christine Pai said in an official statement, as quoted by The Verge, Tuesday (8/3/2022).
"Boomerang is still supported in the main app in Stories, and Layout will still be a standalone app in the Store. We'll continue to develop new ways for people to be creative and have fun on Instagram."
Boomerang and Hyperlapse's removal from the app store came to light shortly after Instagram announced it would be shutting down the IGTV app. The app will be removed from the app store in mid-March to allow Instagram to focus on placing all of its videos in the main app.
According to AppTopia data, Boomerang and Hyperlapse were last in app stores on March 1. Of the two applications, Boomerang has more users, with the number of downloads reaching 301 million.
Before it was removed, Boomerang was also still quite popular because it was still downloaded about 26,000 times every day. Meanwhile, Hyperlapse has been downloaded 23 million times, and the number of installations is relatively small because this application is only available on iOS.
The Boomerang app was first released in 2015. The main function of this app is to create repetitive short videos that can be uploaded on Instagram or Facebook.
In 2016, the features of this app were incorporated into the main Instagram app. Even though the app has been removed, users can access the Boomerang feature via Instagram Stories.
While Hyperlapse was first launched in 2014. This application allows users to create time-lapse videos that look professional and offer powerful video stabilization. It is unknown whether the features of this app will be carried over to the main Instagram app.
