At the launch of the Galaxy S22 last February, Samsung focused on the camera capabilities of this phone. They claim to have made a series of improvements so that the resulting photos are bright, detailed and accurate both day and night.
We and a number of media spoke with Joshua Sungdae Cho, VP and Head of Visual SW R&D at MX Business at Samsung. He also revealed the kitchen secrets of the Galaxy S22 series camera.
A little information Cho has been devoted to Samsung since 2004. Throughout his career he has focused on the camera and its features, some of which are Single Take, Bibxy Visioan and others.
In his presentation, there are five main focuses that are in the spotlight on the Galaxy S22 series camera.
1. Nightography
In low light conditions, Samsung promises more detailed shots of the Galaxy S22 series and better dynamic range. This is thanks to the NPU and GPU working together to produce the best algorithms.
The Nightography feature is also applied to portrait mode on the front and rear cameras. Even in low light conditions, the Galaxy S22 camera is able to clearly display objects and depth information very well.
"Users will love the bokeh effect," said Cho.
Interestingly, Samsung provides a 3x zoom portrait option on the rear camera. Even though this ability is quite difficult to apply in low light conditions.
"It is very difficult for 3x zoom to recognize the human body. But we use the Nightography feature so that users will like the portrait photos," said Cho.
2. More Detailed Photos
Cho said the 108 camera is difficult to produce good shots in low light conditions. For this reason, Samsung combines 12 MP shots to reduce noise and 108 MP for more detailed photos. The end result is a brighter and sharper photo.
In portrait mode, Samsung uses the new AI Stereo Depth Map technology. Previously, Samsung used a single camera, in the Galaxy S22 series it combines it with an NPU for depth. So that helps distinguish the object and its background.
"In the past it was very difficult to display thin objects with a bokeh background such as a straw in a glass or a fan. But on the Galaxy S22, each segment is displayed precisely," explained Cho.

3. Space Zoom
Although it is not a new feature, the Space Zoom capability on the Galaxy S22 series is improved. Samsung managed to increase the level of detail of images captured at a distance.
Cho said when shooting at 100x zoom it was very difficult to improve image quality. However, his party managed to do this by using Super Resolution and NPU technology to improve image detail.
4. Expert RAW
Previously, Samsung only provided the Pro Mode feature, now the RAW Camera application has been added. This feature is especially useful for professional users as it offers a wider dynamic range and captures multi-frame based 16bit RAW images.
The RAW Camera application can be used for direct editing after shooting. Interestingly, it is integrated with the Adobe Lightroom application for further editing.
Cho revealed that Samsung continues to polish Expert RAW through learning methods so that its capabilities continue to improve. However, he noted that the RAW files obtained with the camera and the Galaxy S22 series will be different because of their respective characteristics. But Samsung is trying to provide the best overall experience possible.
5. Galaxy Camera in Third-Party Apps
Galaxy Camera is now available on third-party apps, namely Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok. So photos and videos taken directly from the three applications reduce the quality like most Android phones.
