After buying a 9.2% stake in Twitter and becoming the largest shareholder, Elon Musk has joined Twitter's board of directors. But this position does not mean that the SpaceX and Tesla boss will be able to tweet at will without consequences.
Twitter spokesman Adrian Zamora said Twitter was committed to impartiality in the development and enforcement of its policies and rules, indicating that Musk should follow Twitter's policies like any other user.
This means that Musk will not get special treatment and Twitter could ban or suspend his account if found to be violating the rules.
Regarding Musk's potential huge influence on Twitter, Zamora said board members can't make decisions about Twitter's policy, but they still play a large role in providing feedback and advice.
"Our policy decisions cannot be determined by the Board of Directors or shareholders," said Zamora in an official statement, as quoted from The Verge, Wednesday (6/4/2022).
"As always, our Board of Directors plays an advisory role and provides critical feedback across our services. Our day-to-day operations and decisions are made by Twitter management and employees."
Of course Musk will still have an important role related to some crucial aspects on Twitter. Members of the board of directors must approve the merger and oversee the company's business performance.
Shortly after being revealed as Twitter's biggest shareholder, Musk immediately started a poll asking if Twitter users wanted an edit button.
Sure enough, the day after the tweet Twitter announced that it was developing an edit button, a feature that users have been waiting for the most. But the company with the bird logo has denied that the idea came from Musk.
"Yes, we've been developing the edit feature since last year! No, we didn't get the idea from a poll," said the Twitter account Comms when announcing the edit button feature, followed by a winking emoji.
