Apparently, the Indian government and Elon Musk have also been negotiating for a long time. But India must swallow the disappointment because Elon chose Indonesia.
Some Indian media such as India Times and ABP Live even made the news with the tone of why Elon Musk prefers Indonesia over India. They compactly blame the Indian government.
As we can see, Sunday (22/5/2022) ABP Live reported a lengthy analysis blaming the Indian government for ignoring Tesla's request to reduce import taxes. In fact, according to them, the reduction of import tax is a stage from Tesla selling cars and then building a car factory.
"Obviously Tesla wants to try the Indian market with imported electric cars. Once it's steady, they will produce them locally," said ABP Live.
Another advantage of Indonesia over India is the source of nickel for electric batteries. It is this that makes India seem so weak.
The India Times also blamed the Indian government for losing aggressively to the Indonesian government in persuading Elon Musk to open a factory in Bollywood. On the Indian side, it is Indian Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari who is negotiating with Tesla.
The India Times said what worried Elon was the very high car import tax. Tesla even has a team in India led by Nishant Prasad for their business potential there.
Now Prasad has been transferred to Tesla's Charging Operation Lead for Asia Pacific. His deputy, Manoj Khurana, was taken by Elon Musk to California for production.
Looks like the Tesla thing in India is over. They must recognize Indonesia's superiority.
