Yesterday we reported that the personal details of MyIdentity 22.5 million Malaysians born from 1940 to 2004 were leaked and sold on the dark web arena for $ 10 thousand. The details include the name, home address, telephone number and also a picture of the face that is seen present with a size of 160GB.
Today, Home Minister Datuk Hamzah Zainuddin issued a statement reported by Bernama and said that the data sold on the dark web arena was not taken from the National Registration Department (JPN) database.
He said that the Home Ministry had a mechanism to study the matter and found that the data was seen to have been taken from agencies that had permission to obtain information from the NRD.
"All individuals involved in the sale of this personal data will be called in to assist in the investigation and the results of the full investigation will be announced shortly." he said. Preliminary investigations found that the data sold on dark websites was a collection from a wide variety of sources.
In the meantime, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin also said that the procedure to obtain personal details from the NRD database through the agencies under the department will be reviewed.
"JPN feels there is a need for personal data to be obtained directly from the department so that the issue of data theft does not happen again."
