Western Digital Promises Hard Disk With 50TB Of Storage Will Arrive In A Few Years

Western Digital, a leading computer storage manufacturer has said that hard disk storage with a storage volume as high as 50TB is coming soon.

During their investor day event, Western Digital showcased their 22TB storage offerings as well as their 26TB using Conventional Magnetic Recording and Shiingled Magnetic Recording technologies.

In the meantime, they also showcased the second generation energy-assisted perpendicular magnetic recording data recording technology (ePMR 2) which allows the company to develop hard disks with a storage volume as high as 32TB in the near future.

However, to increase the amount of storage to 40 and 50TB, Western Digital says they will need to develop and complete Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) data recording technology that will allow them to build these hard drives by 2026.

The need for long-term storage is seen to be increasing recently, and although SSD storage is seen to be increasingly popular among consumers, hard disk storage is still needed especially by data centers that store data for long periods of time and with high storage hard disk offerings, data centers this can use a smaller amount of space to store more data.
