Microsoft Defender Released on Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android

Microsoft released a new application called Microsoft Defender, which is a cyber security guard for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android operating systems.

Defender is actually the name Microsoft has used for an antivirus feature that has been in Windows for years. But now they have updated it into a software that can be used on various platforms.

Microsoft Defender will be available to Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers, and the features themselves will vary by platform. On iOS and iPadOS for example, there is no antivirus protection, but only protection from phishing on the web.

While on Android, Defender is equipped with antivirus protection and the ability to detect malware. The app will also scan various links for phishing protection.

Finally in Windows, Defender is more like a dashboard and does not replace the Windows Security application that is already integrated in Windows, as quoted from The Verge, Sunday (19/6/2022).

There are also features that can provide warnings and tips, but tips specifically are only available on Windows and macOS.

Maybe what is offered by Microsoft is not much different from a variety of similar applications and services. But Microsoft promises that they will bring even more features in the future.

"The expansion of our security portfolio with Microsoft Defender for individuals is a natural and exciting journey for us as a security company. This is just the beginning. As we look forward, we will continue to bring more protections in a dashboard, including features such as theft protection identity and online security protection," said Vasu Jakkal, corporate vice president of Microsoft Security.
