Microsoft Wants Laptop Developers Not To Use Hard Drives As Primary Storage By 2023

When buying a laptop, one of the things to pay attention to is the use of storage in a device. Computers today typically use SSD storage as opposed to hard disks because of its much faster performance compared to hard disks.

But there are still some laptop brands that still use hard drives as the main storage because of its lower cost compared to SSDs. Hard drives also typically have a higher storage value compared to SSDs at the same price.

Recently, a report from TrendFocus, a data storage analytics company has said that Microsoft, one of the largest technology companies known for their Microsoft Windows operating system has asked all laptop makers to no longer use hard drives as their primary storage option by 2023 when included. along with their operating systems.

Aside from faster computer start -up times, Microsoft made this request because two of the key features of the Windows 11 operating system, namely Microsoft DirectStorage and the Windows Subsystem for Android require fast SSD storage performance.

Microsoft DirectStorage is a feature that speeds up the process of starting computer games and creative software, while the Windows Subsystem for Android allows Android applications to be used by default on the operating system.

TrendFocus vice president John Chen says that forcing the use of SSDs over hard drives will make it harder for OEM companies to offer more affordable laptops. Converting a hard drive with 1TB of storage to an SSD at the same value will only give an SSD storage of 256GB.

There are many businesses and individuals who may be more concerned with higher amounts of storage and less concerned with features like DirectStorage or even Android app support on their computers.

For now, the OEM laptop companies have yet to decide on a consensus to follow Microsoft's request or not.
