MOSTI: Nuclear Technology Used In The Production Of Extreme Weather Resilient Rice Seeds

Apart from the introduction of electric tricycles in Terengganu, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) also shared on innovations and developments in the agricultural arena.

Under the Malaysian Nuclear Agency, studies involving the breeding of rice mutation breeds have been conducted since the 1980s. Nuclear technology is used in agriculture, which helps increase the productivity of crop production.

The induction mutation method using gamma radiation has been used in producing a variety of new variations that are much better than their parent.

Under this study, the production of IS21 Paddy seeds is one of the best achievements. This is because it has agronomic features that are much needed in the rice industry.

These rice seeds are seen to have high resistance to extreme weather today, and at the same time have resistance to several rice diseases that are often detrimental to rice farmers.

In addition to durability, these rice seeds can also produce up to 10 tons per hectare depending on the planting area.
