The contraceptive pill has so far only been produced for female users. This places the responsibility of preventing unplanned pregnancies in the hands of women entirely. But now two pregnancy planning pills for men have already successfully undergone the first phase clinical trial process with positive reactions.
The pills named DMAU and 11β-MNTD are from a class of drugs called progestogenic androgens. It reduces the level of testosterone in the body of the taker. A decrease in testosterone levels will reduce the amount of sperm which in turn reduces the likelihood of pregnancy.
A total of 96 participants participated in the study with 75% saying they had no issues to continue their intake. Some testosterone -based contraceptive pills have been tested before but cause side effects to the taker. With the positive reaction from the participants, the future of this contraceptive pill marketed to the public is increasing.
Previously the contraceptive pill test for men was successfully tested on laboratory rats. The compound YCT529 used inhibits sperm production in the penis thus producing temporary infertility. Sperm production returned to normal 6 weeks after YCT529 intake was stopped.
