The Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo) has given its blessing to Elon Musk's Starlink to operate in Indonesia. Telkomsat, a subsidiary of Telkom, purchased its satellite capacity to serve corporate customers.
This certainty is known from the statement by the Minister of Communication and Information (Menkominfo) Johnny G Plate to us, Friday (10/6/2022).
The Minister of Communication and Information stated that the Starlink service is not for retail customers, but specifically for closed fixed networks.
"The Communications and Informatics grants Special Non-Geostationary Satellite Anchoring Rights to PT Telkom Satelit Indonesia as a backhaul corporate user in the operation of the closed fixed network of Starlink satellites. Not for retail customer services with direct internet access by Starlink," said the Minister of Communications and Informatics.
Furthermore, the Minister of Communication and Informatics said that the Special Anchoring Rights for Non-Gestationary Satellite Orbit (NGSO) must meet the requirements stipulated by law, including reciprocal rights and will be evaluated every year.
"Starlink can only operate if the gateway station has been built by Telkomsat. The gateway station is fully invested and belongs to Telkomsat," said Johnny.
"Without the Telkomsat gateway station, the Starlink satellite cannot function to serve Telkomsat backhaul. The anchoring rights are also exclusive only to Telkomsat, for services for Telkom Group backhaul needs," he concluded.
Previously, since last year, Elon Musk was intensively developing Starlink, a satellite-based internet service to various countries. Even Starlink opens pre-order services for the Indonesian market.
