TikTok is currently facing various accusations as a platform for spreading fake news, especially during the general election in a country, one of which is the Philippines.
As a result, this video -sharing application is working hard to combat the spread of fake news and other negative content on the TikTok platform.
Melansir from ABS-CBN, Tuesday (7/6/2022) Tiktok Head of Public Policy for the Philippines and Malaysia Toff Rada said that TikTok has actively removed posts that violate company guidelines such as displaying false information or hoaks, intimidation, racism, and other forms of discrimination.
He revealed that in the last quarter of 2021 TikTok had removed as many as 94% of the infringing videos even before the posting was reported.
"We respond to fake news very seriously. We have a special team that removes various forms of disinformation," Rada said.
TikTok has also partnered with fact -checking groups and media organizations to help verify some content.
Slightly disputed that Tiktok played a major role in disinformation during the recent Philippine general election, saying his party would immediately remove the infringing content.
But he added that there may be posts of Tiktok content uploaded to other social media sites such as Facebook. Unfortunately, TikTok has no control over the posting.
So to further increase efforts in the fight against fake news, TikTok claims to be launching a Digital Literacy Center in the Philippines. TikTok will partner with academics, governments, and content creators to educate the public about what to post and share online.
TikTok will also ask popular content creators or creators to share videos on how to find fake news and stop spreading disinformation.
Rather hopes the move can help Filipinos to be more aware as well as critical to identify in determining what types of content are fake news on social media.
"The problem of fake news is a shared problem that requires shared responsibility if we want to get a real solution," he added.
Tiktok has about 240 million active users in Southeast Asia. No data is yet available for the Philippines, but the country remains a growing market for companies.
