Tim Cook Opens Up About Apple's AR Headset

Apple has long been rumored to be launching an augmented reality (AR) headset soon. Now Apple CEO Tim Cook is outspoken about Apple's dreams and plans in the AR sector.

In an interview with China Daily USA, Cook was asked about what factors can ensure AR technology to be successful in the consumer market. Previously, Cook had repeatedly revealed how important AR is to Apple.

"I'm very passionate about AR as you probably know. And the most important thing for any technology, including AR, is to put humanity at the center," Cook said, as quoted by CNBC, Friday (24/6/2022).

He then explained to what extent Apple's involvement in developing AR technology, which he said was still focused on AR applications for iPhone and iPad.

According to Cook, currently the development of AR technology is still in its early stages. But this 61-year-old man suddenly indirectly informed that Apple was developing its first AR headset.

"I'm really excited about the opportunities we've seen in this area, and stay tuned with us and you'll see what we have to offer," he said.

Apple's own AR headset has been rumored for years, and some even report that the iPhone maker is developing an AR/VR headset, also known as mixed reality.

The AR headset made by Apple is reportedly a unit that can function alone because the computer is built into the headset. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo even said the chip that will be used in Apple's AR headset will have the same performance as the chip that carries the Mac.

Recent rumors have it that Apple's AR headset is almost ready. Apple is currently working on its operating system called Reality OS, and Apple's board of directors even had a chance to try out the device.

Bloomberg reports that Apple plans to introduce the headset in late 2022, but it could be pushed back to early 2023. The same report says Apple will start selling the headset in 2023.

If these rumors prove to be true, then Apple will catch up with competitors who have entered the AR/VR world first. Like Microsoft, which has launched Hololens AR glasses, and Meta/Facebook, which is now focusing on developing the virtual world in the metaverse.
