Can Be Used When Wet, Apple Wants Ultrasonic in AirPods

The US Patent and Trademark Office has published an Apple patent application regarding an advanced ultrasonic touch sensor. According to a report from Patently Apple, the patent will apply to the use of ultrasonic technology in AirPods Pro and AirPods Max devices.

Ultrasonic technology will allow future AirPods Pro and AirPods Max to perform better when wet or when wearing gloves. Thus launched from 9to5mac, Sunday (3/7/2022).

The current sensors in AirPods work to maintain the same performance when in contact with wet conditions. Also, AirPods Pro sensors tend not to work properly when the user is wearing gloves.

This performance boost will help users in winter or for those who might wear gloves while working.

The ultrasonic touch-sensing system is less affected when a conductive, electrically buoyant liquid such as a drop of water or an insulated object such as a gloved finger comes into contact with its touch sensitive surface.

The patent filed by Apple includes ultrasonic touch-sensing capabilities and could be used in future AirPods models. In addition, ultrasonic technology can improve touch accuracy on AirPods Pro and AirPods Max.

With increased accuracy and easier use around water and gloves, AirPods will become the more perfect companion.

Whether relaxing on the beach or taking a walk on a cold winter day, ultrasonic technology can bring an important upgrade to one of these favorite devices.

However, keep in mind that this technology is only a patent application. Its presence cannot be ascertained whether or not the sensor is working or not.
