We reported last week that data of nearly 1 billion Chinese nationals in the Shanghai police database were sold on the black market at a price of around RM892,000 alone. The source of the data vulnerability was the Alibaba Cloud database management dashboard that used no password placed resulting in it being exposed for a year.
Initially any discussion of this leakage of personal data has been blocked from social media in China. But several Alibaba executives have been asked to provide explanations to Shanghai police about the incident which is seen as quite embarrassing. As a result, Alibaba shares fell nearly 6% due to an investigation initiated by the police.
