Self -driving vehicles will be a normal daily sight in the near future. But some experiments show there are issues when self -driving vehicles operate with normal vehicles and pedestrians. In Switzerland, a dedicated underground tunnel system for self -driving vehicles will be developed by 2031.
Cargo Sous Terrain is a 70 -kilometer long tunnel connecting Zurich and Härkingen/Niederbipp. There are 10 stops that will be cargo distribution centers to nearby controls. The 6 -meter wide tunnel will be equipped with three lanes with electric self -driving pods that will operate at a speed of 30 km/h. Power will be supplied via wireless induction technology under each lane.
The construction cost of the first phase of Cargo Sous Terrain reached CHf 3 billion (~ RM 13.57 billion) and if it is successful there are plans to expand the network to the whole of Switzerland along 500km. The developers of CST hope that with the existence of their system, the roads will no longer be full of vehicles, thus reducing congestion.
